Katy

Katy

Ch & Am Ch Serekunda Spice Girl

Owned & bred by Margaret

She gained her first CC under Mr Albert Wright handled by Glynis Brekkerud (Kossab) at the Birmingham Dog Show in May 1999.

Later in the year we decided to tour the US, to see that magnificent and varied country and to see how our two young bitches would make out in the US dog scene, we were 'green' and had little idea how things would work out - just a lot of 'ifs'.

Our travels started in Florida, our first show at Tampa Bay Poodle Club on Jan 10th 2000, we had arrived two days before! Both dogs got soundly beaten by the illustrious line up of professionals with superbly trimmed dogs. After the show Mrs Susan Fraser (Bibelots) came up to me and asked " let me turn her from a cart horse into a race horse!!" So, Katy went back on the table and out came the clippers and scissors and much of the coat that I had lovingly grown ended up on the floor!!

We left Ali with Gina Weiser and travelled west with Kate showing at numerous shows as we went, with some success, finally arriving in California and the shows at Bakersfield in March 2000. There we talked to Mrs Cohen (Aleph), she recommended that we talk to handler Kim Russell, then of Sacramento. We subsequently travelled to Northern California and met Kim at Vallejo in May, Kim gave Kate a run round and agreed to try her out. We said we were going to PCA to see Ali in June and hoped to see Katy there too. Kim said she would let us know shortly, but she 'didn't want to look stupid' We left Katy with Kim and headed east, only to receive a mobile call from Kim whilst parked in a snowy forest in Southern Colorado, telling us that she had won the non-sporting group on 14th May and her first major points off of a bulldog!! Oh! How astonished we were!

Kim finished her in September and then agreed to Special her. She won several groups and eventually competed at Westminster Show in New York in February 2001. She climbed to 5th place in SP listings. Her last show was at PCA National in June where she got into the final line up in the Specials class, not bad, considering she was several weeks pregnant by Paul!. Kim really transformed our 'carthorse into a racehorse', she presented her beautifully and trained her to move consistently with elegance and great style. A great show girl herself. Our thanks and affection to Kim Russell -Walz

Immediately after the PCA show she returned home to join her sister in Ralph & Sue Holmes (Suralium) quarantine kennels. I stripped her show coat off, two pups Zak and Bridget were born in July. She looked good, so a little reluctantly, I decided to let her coat grow back. After quarantine she joined our other Standards at home and settled down to grow a coat; she still looked good. Her coat took some 12 months to grow into something like show style, and she entered her first open show at Burton-in-Lonsdale in August 2002.

She gained her second CC judged by Dawn Little (Dorvalle) at The Standard Poodle Club in October, her third CC and her UK title at LKA under Marita Rodgers (Montravia) at NEC Birmingham in December, each time being handled by Karen Patterson (Kamarri). Karen also handled her to win her 4th CC at Crufts in 2003 losing out to Rico for Best of Breed judged by Nina Saunders.

In June 2003 we travelled to Norway to mate her to King, and had four puppies, Albert, Harry, Jack & Vicky, in August. She was mated, with KC permission, to Spencer owned by Marlene Carter (Somanic), the pups arrived at the end of June 2005, two white dogs, two black dogs and one black bitch- Leon, who went to Japan, and Truly are being shown the others became pets.

Katy is 10 in April 2007, and remains in tip top condition, full of life and very eager to play. So we thought we would call her bluff and give her a run out at Crufts in the Veterans class!! We are certain she will enjoy herself, hope Margaret does too! Well at Crufts she did us proud and won Veteran being handled by Martin Gregory (Gregmar) of San Francisco, he said he did it for his fellow handler and regular competitor Kim Russell-Walz!!

I then decided to retire her from the ring, knowing that she had achieved all I could have hoped of her!! A super girl- still stubborn and single minded though! She lived a good life until 13 1/2 years- the boss of our kennel to the end.
