Owned by Margaret and now lives in Lancaster
Bred by Kim & Rick Bates-Penndragon
The intention was of course to sort out the most desirable pup. As is often the case, the assembly didn't really agree on anything!! Margaret chose Arthur. Kim Russell-Walz then took him under her wing and commenced training him for the show ring. So it was with a keen interest that we met up with him, now 11 months old, and his breeders at the PCA National Speciality in Salisbury, Maryland in 2005
He had become a very well built and handsome dog, with a really outgoing personality, just like his parents. A pretty dog with an appealing look. He did well in the show too, being shown out of his class in the American Bred class he was awarded 2nd place in a class of 17 dogs- not bad at all. Our thanks to Kim & Rick Bates for letting us have him. We planned to bring him to the UK and so Kim started the procedure for obtaining a UK pet passport.
We met up with him again during our visit to San Francisco at the end of October 2005 and we continued to be impressed by his shape, pigment and movement. He won his first major at the end of Nov 2005 and then got four consective Reserve Dog placings at the San Mateo shows in early December, the judges included our own Geoff Corish and Michael Coad.
We visited the Palm Springs shows in early January 2006, and though he showed well he didn't manage to beat the pups against him, by then he had gained a few points towards his AKC champioship.
In April, he at last got his act together!! At Yosemite KC he was winners dog, both days, earning 4 points, on 15/16th at Sacramento KC he won back to back 3 point majors. Then at Chief Solano KC on 22nd April he won his fourth major and 3 points- which finished him with 4 majors and 17 points. Well done to his handler Kim Russell-Walz and her assistants Ari and Akiko
We again visited the PCA show in June 2006 and Arthur was entered in the Open class of 30 dogs, under Frank Sabella, he did well making the final cut but was not placed. He was, as always, well presented by Kim and showed well. His travel paper work was completed, all the forms, health check and treatments were completed and he returned with us to UK on 19th June 2006.
We had planned to show him as soon as we were home, but within two days of our return his coat began to knot badly, and after 10 days we decided to cut his main coat off, a very sad day! It seems he had contracted wet eczema, either from a bite, or as a reaction to the tick and parasite treatment that he received prior to entry into UK. So his debut in the UK ring will be delayed by many months until his full coat grows back.
In the meantime he is enjoying his short coat style, he looks great and loves to prance around showing off. At the end of 2006 his coat was of full depth on the sides and back but his neck hair still has inches to grow. His coat, always good is growing back even more dense than before and requires really regular maintenance.
His main coat, jacket, grew very quickly encouraging us to enter him in his first show in UK in early April at the Scottish Poodle Club show in Dumfries. He was placed third and looked quite good but was rather playful. Since then he has been entered in several shows, still needing top & neck hair. He is beginning to settle down and getting used to showing in UK but is up against some tough competition.
